Camp Opportunity began in 1980.  Since then, this special program has spread to several states all over the country.  The organization made its way to Maryland and held its first camp here in 1985.  Camp Opportunity was founded by a group of dedicated unpaid volunteers and still to this day relies exclusively on a community of people whose only compensation is the satisfaction of making a difference in the lives of the special children that we work with.  In the organization’s early days, the volunteers were primarily from the same community of Dundalk, Maryland and recruited campers from their neighborhoods.  Now, our community of volunteers come from all over the country, and the world, including South Africa and Australia!  Our organization started as a one week overnight camp for neglected and abused children and over the years has worked towards being a year round program and resource for Maryland’s At-Risk youth.

Funding for camp is provided through the Federal Government’s Combined Federal Campaign, the United Way, the Fresh Air Society of Baltimore, and many individual donations.

One tenet of the camp program is that the incorporation of certain religious ideas may benefit the campers. As such, the idea of a God or Creator may be introduced into some lessons and each day ends with a prayer of thanks.
